Easy Steps for Planting a Raised Garden Bed

Steps to planting a raised garden:

  1. We planted a raised vegetable garden in the spring. Several years ago, my hubby and I made raised beds from treated lumber, but you could order some here. We live in the Midwest, so we started in late April.

  2. We bought quality zucchini, cucumber, and tomato plants at the Honey Creek Garden Club plant sale. A local wholesaler provides the plants to the club, which raises money for student scholarships.

  3. We added a mixture of topsoil, compost, and potting soil. You may want to try these proportions:

    • 60% topsoil

    • 30% compost

    • 10% Potting soil (a soilless growing mix that contains peat moss, perlite, and/or vermiculite)

  4. Place your raised beds in a sunny area.

  5. Water regularly if it doesn’t rain.

  6. Wait for your fresh vegetables to grow.

  7. Enjoy the fruits of your labor!
