Empty Nest Film Fiascos: Roll Tape...

The Frustrations of Filming, Editing, and Posting Instagram Reels: An Empty Nester Content Creator's Struggle

If you've noticed my absence from blog posts recently, it’s because creating, editing, and posting Instagram Reels has taken over my life. I joined the IG Reels on Fire Challenge to grow my social media reach and connect with more empty nesters like you. My mission is to help you navigate this season of change with faith while inspiring connection, passion, and purpose. But I didn’t expect just how time-consuming this process would be.

Instagram Reels may seem like fun, bite-sized videos, but the reality behind the scenes is a whirlwind of effort and frustration. From endless takes and technical glitches to editing challenges and managing expectations, creating even a short clip is no small feat.

Filming Chaos
It starts with filming—what should be simple often turns into multiple takes due to lighting, background noise, or unexpected interruptions. Getting everything just right can feel like a battle.

Editing Woes
Then there’s editing—where the true challenge begins. Cutting down content, syncing it to music, and making sure it flows perfectly in under 90 seconds can take hours. Add in the need for captions, which are essential but often a headache to format, and the task becomes even more daunting.

The Final Stretch
Finally, posting—seems easy, right? Yet, finding the best time to post, choosing the right hashtags, and hoping the Instagram algorithm plays nice can make hitting that “Post” button nerve-wracking.

But through it all, I remind myself why I started: to reach and uplift fellow empty nesters, like you, who are seeking a renewed sense of purpose in this phase of life.

If you or someone you know has video editing skills and wants to be part of this mission, please reach out. Your help could make a huge difference!

Jo Wilhelm

Jo Wilhelm, founder of Connect Home Life and retired wealth management professional, understands the bittersweet mix of grief and freedom that follows life after raising children.

After stepping away from her financial career due to health challenges, she devoted herself fully to family life. When her children moved out, and the house grew quiet, she faced the identity shift many empty nest moms experience:

  •  Who am I beyond parenting?

  • What is my purpose in this next season?

  • How do I realign my daily life with God's direction?

Her children later married and built lives of their own, but the transition began long before wedding celebrations. The empty nest season arrived in stages — and with it came both gratitude and grief.

Parenting roles shifted. Marriage rhythms adjusted. Faith deepened in unexpected ways.

Today, Jo equips Christian empty nesters with faith-based digital resources, Biblical encouragement, and personal mentoring designed to help them rediscover identity, reignite passion, and realign their lives with God's calling.

Her work centers on helping empty nesters rediscover purpose after the kids leave home — not by starting over, but by stepping forward with intention. Throughout Connect Home Life, Jo shares practical encouragement and honest reflections from her own empty nest journey to help others navigate this season with faith and confidence.
